Dealing with Unpleasant Situations

How to deal with unpleasant people or situation:

First, give a warning that you don’t like what is happening and that it should not be repeated.

Second time if the offence is repeated, give punishment.

If the same offence is repeated the third time, amputate. Mentally cut yourself off from that person totally.

It is very easy to break up, but much harder to reconcile and continue being together.

For everything there is a three-point scale to judge and decide.

Check whether it is referring to rajas, tamas, or satva.

Ideally, you should be in sattva as much as possible. When you come to know where you stand, you pray and ask Prabhu for deliverance from that state, pray that such situations do not come to you where you have to behave in a tamasic or rajasic manner. It is only from sattva can you rise to become gunateet.

Raj guna gives you time to pray, ‘May this situation not come to me.’

How to know which state you are in? Chapter 18 of the Gita talks very clearly about the three. A Tamasic person is one who has rakshasi or demonic tendencies, asuric tendencies. Someone who has no qualms about taking advantage of others or harming others to get ahead; is bitter in his speech, tries to use others for his own benefit; steps on others to get ahead; loves to eat meat, eat fried food, drink. He enjoys his state of being and is not interested in rising to rajas or sattva. Tamasic is pure darkness. He is here only to teach people something.

A Rajasic person loves good living, is lazy, will work only when it is beneficial for him, but he does not believe in harming others to get ahead. He loves himself, loves to indulge in luxury. But he is not fixed in his state. He easily rolls towards satva or tamas. He should keep in dhyan where he wants to go. His aim should be to move towards satva, for that is the state which will lead him to becoming gunateet.

Sattva or sat is a guna – of a saint, a person who is ready to face any trouble for the sake of truth; is content in whatever state he is in; prayerful, simple living and high thinking, focusing only on his own growth. Such people though run the risk of becoming egoistic – that they are such truthful people – this leads to their downfall. Also a sat person can slip into rajas state sometimes, but if he is ready to face all the problems, he will eventually become gunateet.

It is important to know your true nature and not move from it, or else you will lose; you will face problems.

Hence, when you have to take a decision, chose a response which is closest to the satogun, it will take you closer to sattva state, for it is from that state alone can you ascend to become gunateet. Rise above the ebb and fall of the gunas and be fixed in the state of perpetual Ananda.
